Why should I have a Parenting Consultation?
A parenting consultation can be beneficial for any parent with questions or concerns about his or her children and their development. Parenting can be challenging and stressful. A consultation can help parents feel emotionally supported while they learn new strategies for better communication, cooperation, and connection with their children. Parenting Consultations can be for any age, including newborns. Often parents, especially first-time parents, are overwhelmed with numerous questions when they bring their newborn home. A Parenting Consultation, sometimes in just a few sessions, can work wonders in easing parents' anxieties, allowing them to lovingly and calmly connect with their new little bundle of joy. As babies grow older, toddlerhood brings a whole new set of questions and challenges from potty training, discipline, and sleep to eating, cooperating, sharing, and playing. For older children, parents often struggle with issues such as their children's self-esteem, social skills, learning challenges, and behavior at home and school. Advocacy and support surrounding school meetings is another avenue of consultation. At any age, a Parenting Consultation can provide you with answers to your questions, resources in your community, effective parenting strategies, and emotional support and guidance.
How long does a Consultation last?
Consultations typically involve an initial meeting of 1 hour to develop the Evaluation Plan (see Parent Consultations page) followed by approximately 1-5 additional sessions of 1 to 1 1/2 hours each. Each individual family has its own needs and timeline. My model of in-home as well as school-based consultations is convenient and flexible, allowing a schedule that best fits your lifestyle.
Single Session consultations can also be highly effective in answering questions and concerns and for a developmental screening.
Is my Consultation confidential?
Every Consultation begins with a discussion and signing of an Informed Consent document. This document outlines the services that I provide, including my business policies and confidentiality. As a psychologist, I am ethically and legally bound to protect the confidentiality of our communications, except under specific circumstances which are detailed and explained in the consent document.
Do you offer play groups and/or moms' groups?
Yes. I am available to facilitate and guide weekly or monthly parent-child playgroups as well as mother or father support groups. See the Workshops page for more information on current groups.
Do you offer lectures or talks?
Yes. Please see the Workshops page for a list of possible topics that I can discuss. I can provide these workshops to schools, organizations, medical practices, family resource centers, and other child development practices. You may contact me via phone or email to arrange a parent education talk or professional development training.
